Pagasa warns of flash floods, landslides in Mindanao

- Ghio Ong, Helen Flores -

MANILA, Philippines - The weather bureau advised yesterday residents of Mindanao to be prepared against flash floods and landslides as scattered rains are expected to prevail over the region in the next few days.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the trough of a low-pressure area would bring mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over Mindanao and would become widespread rains over the eastern section.

“Residents living in low-lying areas and along mountain slopes are advised to be on alert for possible flash floods and landslides,” PAGASA said in an advisory.

The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening.

Meanwhile, the weather bureau warned fishermen in northern Luzon against rough to very rough seas with wave heights expected to reach 3.4 to 4.5 meters.

PAGASA said strong to gale force winds are likely to affect the seaboards of northern and eastern seaboards of northern Luzon.

PAGASA said the northern and eastern seaboards of Northern Luzon would experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms.

“Fishing boats and other small sea crafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves,” PAGASA said.
