MANILA, Philippines - Police arrested yesterday the prime suspect in the robbery and killing of a tabloid reporter in Antipolo City.
Jeffrey Montes, 21, was packing his bags for a trip to Samar province when surprised by police operatives at his house in Sitio Lower Kamias in Barangay Sta. Cruz at around 2 a.m. yesterday, said Senior Superintendent Rolando Anduyan, Rizal police director.
Anduyan said Montes admitted stabbing to death Edwin Perez, 54, a reporter of the tabloid People’s Balita.
Anduyan said several witnesses positively identified Montes.
Perez was on his way home aboard his motorcycle when he decided to take shelter at a bakery amid a heavy downpour.
Apparently tired after a day’s work, Perez dozed off. It was at this juncture that Montes and his four companions tried to grab his motorcycle key and wallet.
When Perez fought back, Montes stabbed him twice in the chest.
