Mild quakes recorded across the country

- Charlie Lagasca, Helen Flores -

MANILA, Philippines - Mild earthquakes rocked some parts of the country yesterday but there were no reports of damage or injuries, state seismologists said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremors, with magnitudes 4.2, 4.0 and 2.4, were recorded at 4:13 a.m., 11:07 a.m. and 11:36 a.m., respectively.

The epicenter of the first tremor was 56 kilometers southwest of Sabtang, Batanes.

The second quake was recorded 25 km northwest of South Upi, Maguindanao while the third tremor was five km northwest of Rosario, Northern Samar. It was recorded at intensity 2 in Awang, Datu Udin Sinsuat, Maguindanao and intensity 1 in Cotabato City.

Phivolcs said the quakes were not related to the powerful tremor that struck Chile yesterday. He also allayed fears of a tsunami following the Chile temblor.

A 4.3 magnitude quake also jolted northeast Cagayan province at around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Reports showed that the epicenter of the quake, which was tectonic in origin, was eight km northwest of Santa Ana town, where it was felt at intensity 3.
