Wet summer in Eastern Visayas, Mindanao

- Ghio Ong, Helen Flores -

MANILA, Philippines - Residents of Eastern Visayas and Mindanao are expected to experience a wet summer this year due to the prevailing La Niña phenomenon, the weather bureau said yesterday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the threat of flooding and landslide will be much higher in areas under Type II climate or where there is no dry season.

Areas under Type II climate have no dry season, with a very pronounced wet season from November to January. These areas are mostly located in the eastern section of Bicol, the Visayas and Mindanao.

PAGASA said Metro Manila may not experience a wet summer, as it has a “distinct” dry season.

Metro Manila has Type I climate, which has two pronounced seasons – dry from November to April, and wet the rest of the year. Areas under this type are in western Philippines, which include western Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Bataan, Zambales, Pangasinan, Cavite, Laguna and Metro Manila.
