N. Cotabato mayor's nephew freed by captors

- John Unson -

ALEOSAN, North Cotabato, Philippines – The kidnapped nephew of the town mayor here was reunited with his family after his captors released him at a corn farm in an isolated barangay here after two months in captivity.

Mayor Loreto Cabaya said members of the Aleosan police and the Army’s 40th Infantry Battalion found his nephew wandering not far from where his captors released him late Wednesday.

Armed men seized Romy Cabaya while on his way to the town proper here from nearby Midsayap town last Nov. 19.

“The kidnappers must have thought he is my son, Jason, who also frequently travels from Midsayap to our town and vice versa,” Mayor Cabaya said.

Local officials said the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, religious leaders and chairmen of Muslim-dominated barangays helped secure the victim’s release.
