MANILA, Philippines - A mother and her two-year-old daughter recently drowned after the child fell overboard a vessel off Negros Occidental and the mother, in an attempt to rescue her, jumped into the water, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said yesterday.
PCG spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Algier Ricafrente identified the fatalities as 30-year-old Michelle Tiamsing and her daughter Joemcelle.
Citing reports, the PCG said the Manila-bound M/S Saint Peter the Apostle was sailing 2.7 nautical miles west of Matabang Point in Talisay City, Negros Occidental when the girl, who was supposedly sitting on the railing of the ship, fell into the water.
A passenger told the PCG that she saw Tiamsing jump into the water in an apparent attempt to rescue her daughter.
The bodies of mother and daughter were later found.
