SAN NICOLAS, Ilocos Norte, Philippines – For attempting to butcher a dog that he intended to serve to his balikbayan guests, a tricycle driver here is in trouble with the law.
Chief Inspector Leland Benigno, this town’s police chief, said policemen on patrol chanced upon a parked tricycle carrying a dog with its feet tied and its mouth bloodied.
Upon questioning, Crispino Bueno acknowledged owning the dog, saying he was going to butcher and cook it for lunch for his visitors who came from Hawaii.
Dog food is a popular item among Ilocanos and is oftentimes taken as “pulutan” that goes with their wine drinking sessions.
Benigno said Bueno will be charged with violation of the Animal Welfare Act of 1998.
