Millipedes attack Batanes Village
BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines – Millipedes attacked the village of Yawran in Itbayat town in Batanes, and swarmed into plants, residences and classrooms.
“This attack has never happened before. The millipedes have always been part of the town’s ecosystem but they have never grown this many before,” said municipal secretary Josefa Ponce.
The attack of the millipedes was placed under control after specialists from the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Island Agriculture Research Outreach station sprayed a powerful pesticide on them.
DA Batanes chief Celso Batallones said there was no explanation yet for the sudden increase of the millipedes in the said area.
Millipedes thrive on damp areas such as under leaves, needles and dead plant debris, or in cracks and crevices, feeding on decaying plants and are beneficial as “recyclers” of organic matter.
However, they become a pest when they migrate into buildings as accidental invaders.
