Dog meat trader nabbed

- Ed Amoroso -

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines  – Police arrested and seized from an alleged dog meat trader at least 47 dogs locally known as “askals” following an entrapment operation in a remote area along Barangay San Antonio, San Pedro, Laguna, Saturday morning.

Chief Inspector Orlando Castil, chief of the Laguna Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said Carlson Medina, 30, was charged with violation of Republic Act 8485 (The Animal Welfare Act of 1998) and RA 9482 (Anti-Rabies Act of 2007) with the Laguna provincial prosecutor’s office in San Pedro, Laguna.

Castil told The STAR they conducted the operation in response to a request for assistance of Greg Quimpo of the Animal Kingdom Foundation Inc. (AKFI) regarding reports on the rampant sale of dogs and dog meat in San Pedro town.

Castil said the operation took place at around 6 a.m. Saturday when a CIDG agent and AKFI man posed as buyers.

He said the confiscated askals are now in the custody of AKFI.
