10 NPAs, 1 soldier killed in Abra clash

SOLANO, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines  – At least 10 New People’s Army (NPA) rebels and a soldier were killed in an encounter in the hinterlands of Lacub town in Abra yesterday morning.

Maj. Gen. Rommel Gomez, commander of the 5th Army Division based in Camp Upi in Gamu, Isabela told The STAR that the members of the 41st Infantry Battalion (IB) under Col. Noel Baluyan clashed with an undetermined number of communist rebels starting at around 9 a.m. The fighting continues as of press time, he said.

The 41st IB has just been deployed to the Cordillera region last August after several months of retraining in Camp Upi.
