Urdaneta City allows dumping of Baguio trash

- Eva Visperas -

URDANETA CITY, Philippines – For humanitarian reasons, about 220 tons of garbage from Baguio City, which suffered a trash slide over the weekend, was accommodated for dumping in the newly built modern engineered sanitary landfill here.

Mayor Amadeo Gregory Perez IV told The STAR yesterday that Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan phoned him last Saturday to allow them to move part of the mountain of garbage that cascaded in the Irisan dump to this city.

“At that time, I did not know yet there was a massive trash slide that happened in Baguio City,” Perez said.

He said it was only a verbal request but he acted positively as he and Domogan are colleagues in the League of Cities of the Philippines.

But Perez said he did not expect the garbage to be brought here would be too that much, reaching about 220 tons as per the certification of a personnel assigned in the sanitary landfill in Sitio Calegu, Barangay Catablan here.

As such, the transfer of garbage was stopped immediately the following day.

He said they are limiting the garbage dumped in the landfill to only 40 tons a day, and possibly already segregated before being brought here.

Perez said a ton of segregated garbage dumped here costs P2,500.

He said if Domogan still intends to bring Baguio’s garbage here, Perez could accommodate it at only 10 tons per day.

“There must be a limit because that engineered sanitary landfill was intended for the use of Urdaneta,” he said.
