CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga, Philippines – A worker of Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp.-Philippines died when he got thrown off a speeding forklift at the company’s ship repair yard at the Subic Bay Freeport, police said yesterday.
In a report, Senior Superintendent Arthur de Asis, officer-in-charge of the Olongapo City police, said the victim, James Garagal, 26, hitched a ride on the forklift driven by Richard Payauan on his way to the mess hall of the production department center for his midnight meal.
But as the seven-ton forklift got near the parking area, it hit a concrete ditch cover. With the impact, Garagal was thrown off the forklift, his head hitting the pavement.
Payauan, who was reported to be overspeeding, gave himself up. Charges are being readied against him.
