London-based media group to visit Kalinga

ILAGAN, Isabela ,Philippines  – Members of the London-based International News Safety Institute (INSI) is arriving in the province of Kalinga this week to monitor the situation of the working press in the province following the assault against broadcaster Jerome Tabanganay by Gov. Jocel Baac in Tabuk City last week.

The INSI is a coalition of news organizations, journalist support groups and individuals dedicated to the safety of journalists working in dangerous environments.

The group will document media harassment cases including attempts against the life of Tabanganay and the recent arson of the government radio station where he works.

The organization is also expected to conduct a seminar and training for the working press in Kalinga and the nearby provinces.

Baac, whom Tabanganay had linked to jueteng and illegal logging operations in the province assaulted the broadcaster while he was hosting his noontime radio program. The governor said he was irked of Tabanganay’s continuing criticisms against his administration.
