Sorsogon folk warned of lahar
LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Residents around Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon have been warned again on possible lahar from the volcano’s slopes amid the low pressure area spotted in the South.
There are thick ash deposits on Bulusan’s slopes following the Feb. 21 explosion wherein the volcano belched a three-kilometer cloud of smoke and ash above its summit.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued the warning yesterday to residents near valleys, rivers, streams and other channels originating from the ash-laden Bulusan slopes.
“People living near valleys and rivers/stream channels should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall,” Phivolcs said in its latest bulletin.
