Dagupan dads laud HS student for topping 'sudoku' tilt

- Eva Visperas -

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines  – The city council here lauded via a resolution a high school senior for winning the grand championship in the Brand’s Asia-Pacific Sudoku Challenge held at the Suntec City Mall in Singapore last Oct. 17.

In his resolution approved in yesterday’s session, Councilor Jeslito Seen cited the victory of Sarah Jane Cua of the Pangasinan Universal Institute here as grand champion in the contest, garnering a cash prize of $10,000, S$300 Brand’s Hamper, a glass trophy, and a certificate.

The Asia-Pacific Sudoku Challenge 2010 was a competition open only to the top three winners of national level sudoku competitions, according to the resolution.

Cua, trained by the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines, bested 50 professionals and students from Singapore, China, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Malaysia for the top prize.

Sudoku is a puzzle that puts premium on logic, precision and strategy.

“Sarah Jane’s feat no doubt serves as an inspiring example of how proper training, rigid discipline and firm determination can propel the youth toward excellence in any worthwhile endeavor,” Seen said in his resolution.

Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, presiding officer of the city council, said Cua will be given a plaque on Nov. 16 at the CSI Stadia during the celebration of the first-ever Children’s Congress to be attended by 12,000 children from the city.
