Nueva Caceres archbishop to retire this month
MANILA, Philippines - Nueva Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi is set to retire later this month when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 75.
Legaspi is expected to submit his letter of resignation to Pope Benedict XVI on Nov. 25, the day he turns 75 years old.
The Archdiocese of Nueva Caceres is located in the Bicol Region. The archdiocese covers the second, third and fourth congressional districts of Camarines Sur.
Canon law requires that bishops submit their resignations when they reach their 75th year.
Capiz Archbishop Onesimo Gordoncillo and Pasig Bishop Francisco San Diego also turned 75 this year. However, they continue to govern their dioceses until the Holy Father appoints their replacements.
Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, 78, had already submitted his retirement to the Vatican but he continues to govern the Manila See.
Aside from Rosales, other prelates who already submitted their resignations but have yet to be replaced were Tuguegarao Archbishop Diosdado Talamayan, 78, and Davao Archbishop Fernando Capalla, 76.
Recently, the Pontiff accepted the resignation of Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal and appointed Palo, Leyte Archbishop Jose Palma as his replacement. Vidal tendered his resignation as archbishop in February 2006.
