Ilocos folk: Remove abandoned ship

SAN FERNANDO, La Union, Philippines  – Coastal residents in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte are urging authorities to speed up the removal of an abandoned North Korean vessel, as strong waves have worsened the oil leaking from the ship.

The oil spill from the M/V Nam Yang 8 has reached about five kilometers in Pasaleng Bay, damaging an estimated P50 million in coastal resources, reports said.

In a public hearing of the Ilocos Norte provincial board last Thursday, Capt. George Ursabia, commander of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Northern Luzon District, said removing the vessel from the area would prevent further damage to marine resources.

“As of now, the oil spill is under control. But with worsening weather conditions in the area, the Coast Guard is considering getting a more reputable, big-time salvor to do the salvage operation and move the vessel to a safer ground in coordination with (its) rightful owner,” Ursabia said.

Pagudpud residents led by Mayor Matilde Sales have called on the authorities to immediately remove the Korean vessel, which the municipal government is prevented from touching.
