Hagedorn wins 2nd disqualification case

- Sheila Crisostomo -

MANILA, Philippines - The First Division of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has dismissed the second disqualification case filed against re-electionist Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn for lack of merit.

In a resolution, the First Division said petitioner Eva Ponce failed to prove that Hagedorn is not eligible to run in the May 10 polls.

The division maintained that Hagedorn has not exceeded the term limit for elected officials, contrary to Ponce’s claim.

Ponce alleged that Hagedorn has reached the three-term limit when he won the 2002 recall election and the 2004 and 2007 regular polls.

The First Division, however, ruled that the recall election could not be credited with the full three-year term “for purposes of counting the consecutiveness of an elective official’s term of office.”

Last January, the First Division also junked a similar petition filed by Bienvenido Rodriguez against Hagedorn.
