SAN JACINTO, Pangasinan, Philippines – A simple apprehension for driving a motorcycle without headlights here Monday night turned violent when the rider and the village chief traded shots, leaving the latter dead and the former wounded.
Senior Inspector Ryan Manongdo, this town’s police chief, said barangay tanods accosted motorcycle rider Alden Francis Sanchez Regundique, 23, who, however, fired his caliber .45 pistol.
Barangay Awai chairman Gregorio Andaya, a retired Army sergeant, himself armed with a caliber 9-mm pistol, intervened until shots rang out.
Andaya died while being treated in the hospital, while Regundique is still in critical condition. The latter’s companion, Wilfred Ponce, is under police custody.
