MANILA, Philippines - A 70-year-old man died of heart attack in Butuan City during the second round of Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto boxing bout Sunday, police reported yesterday.
Pacquiao won by technical knockout in the bout after the referee stopped the fight before the end of the 12th round when Cotto could no longer throw any punch at his opponent.
Reports reaching Camp Crame yesterday identified the man as Concordio Jorege Paredes, 70, married and a resident of P-5, Barangay Lapu-Lapu, Butuan City.
Police said at around 2 p.m., Paredes and his son Jonathan, were watching the boxing match between Pacquiao and Cotto at Yetan eatery located at J.C. Aquino Avenue, Butuan City when the old Paredes fell from his chair during the second round.
The victim was immediately brought by his son to MJ Santos Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician due to cardiac arrest. His remains now lies at St. Peter Funeral Homes. – Cecille Suerte Felipe
