Phivolcs warns of Aftershocks in South Cotabato
KORONADAL CITY, Philippines – Some residents in two South Cotabato towns are seriously considering abandoning their homes after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned of strong aftershocks and another earthquake that may follow the tremors last Sept. 18 and 19.
In a statement, Nani Danlag, science research specialist of the Phivolcs station in Central Mindanao, has advised residents, especially those whose houses are poorly built, and owners of buildings that suffered cracks during the earlier earthquakes that struck Norala and Sto. Nino towns “to vacate immediately.”
“This is to prevent injuries if aftershocks and earthquakes happen again,” Danlag said.
Danlag told the residents though to remain calm and avoid panicking during quakes.
The Provincial Disaster and Coordinating Council placed the earthquake damage at more than P6 million.
