Cell site guard repulses NPA rebels

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – A lone security guard bravely repulsed an attack by at least 20 New People’s Army (NPA) rebels on a Globe Telecom cell site in Pio V. Corpuz, Masbate Thursday night, a report reaching Camp General Simeon Ola here said.

But security guard Gerry Besavilla, who shot it out with the rebels with his shotgun and caliber .38 revolver, did not totally claim credit for the feat.

“I started to ran out of bullets and probably would be eventually overrun, had the town police not arrived just on time, prompting the rebels to withdraw to the hinterlands,” police quoted Besavilla as saying in the dialect.

For the past months, communist rebels have been attacking Globe cell sites not only in Masbate but also in other Bicol provinces, particularly Sorsogon. – Cet Dematera
