Review of rural bank laws sought

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – Pampanga third district Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales will seek a review of existing laws on rural banking, after several rural banks in the country, including two in his district, were placed under receivership by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

“There is a need to review pertinent laws on rural banks because these financial institutions play an important role in countryside development and in improving the lives of rural folk,” he said in a statement.

Gonzales, who authored the Bacolor Rehabilitation Act, said he will file a resolution to call on various House committees to look into the problems of the rural banking sector.

Gonzales though hailed the BSP for its swift action in taking over the beleaguered Rural Bank of Sta. Rita and Rural Bank of Bacolor.
