The Supreme Court (SC) has disqualified the vice mayor of Catarman, Camiguin after establishing that he did not renounce his US citizenship when he ran in the 2007 elections.
In a decision penned by Associate Justice Minita Chico Nazario, the SC said the oath of allegiance which Vice Mayor Nestor Jacot made before the Philippine consul general in Los Angeles and his certificate of candidacy “do not substantially comply with the requirement of a personal and sworn renunciation of a foreign citizenship because these are distinct requirements to be complied with for different purpose.” – Mike Frialde
