A police officer in Central Mindanao who was charged with murder before the Department of Justice yesterday for the killing of General Santos City broadcaster Dennis Cuesta is set to be transferred to Camp Crame in Quezon City.
Task Force Usig chief Director Jefferson Soriano said the charges against Acharon were based on the testimonies of two witnesses.
Police are checking if Acharon would match the artist sketch earlier done by the investigators.
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Avelino Razon Jr. and Soriano assured the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines that Cuesta’s family would be given police protection.
Razon, Soriano and other police officials met with the NUJP officers led by its president Rowena Paraan yesterday afternoon amid the apparent upsurge in the killings of mediamen and militants.
The meeting was supposed to revive coordination between the PNP and media organizations.
The NUJP officers asked the PNP leadership and the Task Force Usig to look into reports of a supposed plan to whitewash the case on Cuesta’s killing since one of the suspects is a policeman.
Cuesta was shot by two motorcycle-riding men in General Santos City last Aug. 4. He died in the hospital several days later.
