Police chief belies editor’s story

BAUANG, La Union – The town’s police chief here belied the claim of a Manila-based community newspaper editor that he was allegedly framed up in an alleged illegal drug transaction on Saturday night.

Superintendent Manuel Castro, Bauang police chief, told The STAR that the arrest of Leo Gamit, 46, a resident of Inarawan, Antipolo City and feature editor of Alppa Times, was legitimate and no irregularities happened.

“There was no frame up. It was very clear from our investigation that the suspect ordered one of our police assets to buy marijuana. As soon as the marijuana was delivered, our asset then reported the matter to the tanods (watchmen) who later arrested him with the illegal drugs in his possession,” Castro said.

Some 10.64 grams of dried marijuana leaves wrapped in newspapers were seized from Gamit’s possession during his arrest.     – Jun Elias
