Jeep falls off cliff; trader dead, 20 hurt

-

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna – A 48-year-old businessman was killed and at least 20 others were injured when the passenger jeepney they were riding plunged into a steep ravine in Magsaysay town in Occidental Mindoro yesterday morning, police said.

Senior Superintendent Audie Arroyo, Occidental Mindoro police director, identified the lone fatality as Danny Mauricio, a resident of Jaen, Nueva Ecija.

Four of the 20 injured passengers were identified as Norma Mata, Bonbon Castillo, Romeo Villaverde, and Amjag Rana, a Pakistani national.

PO2 Leopoldo Quiloy said the overloaded passenger jeepney bound for Magsaysay town was maneuvering uphill when the driver lost control of the wheel, sending the vehicle plunging into a ravine in Barangay San Nicolas.

Police said the jeepney driver, who remained unidentified, escaped after the incident.

The jeepney operator, though, promised to extend the necessary assistance to all the victims.   – Arnell Ozaeta
