Smart, Globe deny wiretapping, say they don't have capability

Representatives of Globe Telecoms and Smart Communications, Inc. appeared before the Senate inquiry on wiretapping and categorically denied wiretapping anybody.

Speaking before the Senate body, the representatives also said the telecommunications companies don't have the technological capability to wiretap.

The committees are looking into the allegations behind the wiretapped phone conversation between President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and former elections commissioner Virgilio Garcillano over alleged plans to rig the May 2004 elections

Representing Globe Telecomes were Globel senior VP Rodolfo Salalima and head of regulatory affairs Froilan Castelo, both for lawyers.

Representing for Smart was Eric Espanol, head of Smart Communication Inc.’s legal department.
