Quake shakes Indonesia's Papua

JAKARTA (AFP) - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 struck Papua in Indonesia on Tuesday, seismologists said.

The quake was centered 101 kilometres (62 miles) from Tanahmerah, Irian Jaya and occurred at 6.30 am (2130 GMT Monday) 10 kilometres underground, the US Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Indonesia was the nation worst hit by the earthquake-triggered tsunami of December 2004, which killed some 168,000 people in Aceh province alone.

The archipelago nation sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
