NPA eyed in Leyte forester’s slay

- Roberto Dejon -

ORMOC CITY – Police are looking into the possible hand of the New People’s Army (NPA) in the gunslaying of a Leyte forest ranger while on his way home the other day.

This, after Mercy Torres, long-time live-in partner of slain forest ranger Alfredo Beterbo, recalled that he had received a text message stating, “Gihukman ka na sa kangaroo court (You have been sentenced by the kangaroo court).”

Torres told The STAR that Beterbo got the text message in the afternoon of May 17 after arriving home from office, and promptly reported it to the police.

Prober SPO4 Rudy Sano said Beterbo was killed in much the same manner as the NPA’s Sparrow hit squad executes its targets.

Beterbo’s son Allen Suller said he had warned his father to be extra careful because of the threats to his life.

Sano said an autopsy showed Beterbo had six gunshot wounds, causing his instant death.

He said slugs from possibly a caliber .38 revolver were found at the crime scene.
