US journalist shot dead as he walked to work in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - The editor of the Oakland Post, a weekly newspaper in a town located across the bay from San Francisco, was shot to death as he walked to work Thursday morning, a friend and fellow journalist told AFP.
Chanucey Bailey, 57, "was ambushed by a masked gunman dressed in dark clothing," said Harry Harris, from the Oakland Tribune, the city's leading daily newspaper.
Oakland police did not respond to AFP inquiries about the murder, but Harris said it was still unclear whether the attack was related to Chauncey's work as a reporter or his activism in the black community.
Harris said Bailey had worked 12 years at the Oakland Tribune before joining the Oakland Post two months ago as editor.
