Quake jolts GenSan

-

A 3.5 magnitude tectonic earthquake jolted General Santos City early yesterday morning, but caused no damage, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said the quake struck at 12:13 a.m., and was centered 77 kilometers southeast of General Santos, where it was felt at Intensity 1.

Meanwhile, an Intensity 2 quake was felt in Olongapo City Monday night.

Phivolcs said a 2.6 magnitude quake struck 32 kilometers southwest of Iba, Zambales at 9:42 p.m.

The quakes did not generate aftershocks, it said.

The Philippines is part of the so-called “Ring of Fire” where earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis frequently occur.

About 20 quakes hit the country everyday but only a few are felt, the institute said.
