Gun-for-hire convicted in woman lawyer’s slay

BAGUIO CITY – A gun-for-hire was meted a jail term of 16 to 20 years for the killing of a woman government lawyer here two years ago.

Judge Fernando Vil Pamin-tuan of Regional Trial Court Branch 3 found 28-year-old Benedict Laddawan Fassong guilty of murder for the Sept. 5, 2005 gunslaying of lawyer Eugenia Campol, who worked for the Public Attorney’s Office.

Campol was gunned down while she was about to enter her house at Woodsgate Subdivision at Camp 7.

Police arrested Fassong last year and admitted that an Abra politician had hired him for a fee of P70,000.

Campol’s family hailed Fassong’s conviction, but wished that the masterminds would likewise be prosecuted.

Warrants of arrest have been issued against former Danglas town mayor Benido Balao-as and a town coun-cilor, believed to be behind Campol’s murder.– Artemio Dumlao
