TOKYO (AP) - Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is visiting Japan this week to attend an economic symposium and meet with her Japanese counterpart, officials said Tuesday.

Arroyo was to arrive on Tuesday and meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday, an Abe spokesman said on condition of anonymity, citing office protocol.

During her visit, which ends Thursday, Arroyo is to attend a symposium on the "Future of Asia" sponsored by the Japanese business newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

Arroyo last visited Japan in December 2003.
