DOH braces for cholera spread in Ilocos

SAN FERNANDO, La Union – Fearing that the cholera outbreak in the Ilocos region in 2004 might occur again, the regional office of the Department of Health (DOH) is now on alert for the possible occurrence of the water-borne disease because 2007 is its next epidemiological cycle.

Dr. Madeline Retuta, program manager of DOH’s Safe Water System, told The STAR that surveillance of water systems in Pangasinan, La Union and parts of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte is now being undertaken to prevent the contamination of potable water. 

"We are not saying that there will be an outbreak of cholera but (2007) is the next cycle because this year is an epidemiological period. We are already conducting surveillance to ensure the safety of drinking water. We are preparing now before that happens," she said.

Based on data, Retuta said the outbreak of diseases like cholera, acute gastroenteritis and dengue usually occurs within three to four years.

She said such an outbreak usually starts during summer and lasts until the end of the year.

"There are unusual occurrences of cholera in the second and third quarters of the year and that may be the start of the outbreak. But before that, we are already doing something to prevent it," she said.

In 2004, from May to December, the DOH recorded more than 10,000 cholera victims, mostly in Pangasinan and La Union. There were 55 deaths, mostly children.

Retuta advised the public to ensure hygiene and sanitation in and out of their houses.
