ILOILO CITY Hounded by talk about his wifes alleged illicit affair with another man, a robbery suspect bolted the city jail in Jaro district Sunday night purposely to confirm the rumors.
But Ben Rey Gabion gave himself up a few hours after seeing his wife with someone whom he suspects to be her paramour.
"I had heard a lot of rumors that my wife was having an affair with another man that I became confused and anxious. So I decided to check the rumors myself. I wanted to catch her in the act," Gabion told dyOK Aksyon Radyo Iloilo in the dialect.
He said his wife had not visited him for a week despite her promise to do so.
Gabion said he scaled the jails concrete wall shortly after the headcount of the inmates Sunday night, and went to their home in the citys La Paz district.
There he saw his wife alighting from a motorcycle driven by a man whom he did not recognize, Gabion recalled.
"My wife was stunned to see me," he said. He quoted her as saying that she had visited her mother.
After Gabion confronted her, she left. He, meanwhile, stayed at home and asked his mother to contact dyOK Aksyon Radyo Iloilo so he could surrender.
Despite what he saw, Gabion said he still loves his wife. "I will still accept her if she comes back to me and visits me in jail," he said.
