La Union lawmaker’s gun permits revoked

- Jaime Laude -
The Philippine National Police-Civil Security Group has ordered La Union Rep. Tomas Dumpit Sr. to surrender his licensed firearms after murder charges were recently filed against him, together with his son and several others, in connection with the gunslaying of the election supervisor of Bauang, La Union last Jan. 12.

The CSG ordered Dumpit to surrender his high-powered firearms to Camp Crame, and also revoked the gun licenses issued to his son, resigned Army Lt. Col. Tomas "Butch" Dumpit Jr., Caba Vice Mayor Clyde Crispino, SPO1 Eduardo Banay Jr., and Armen Mato.

Chief Superintendent Leonardo Dionisio, CSG director, also revoked the permits of the Dumpits and their two bodyguards to carry firearms outside their residences.

The Dumpits, along with Crispino, Banay, Mato and other persons, were indicted in the Jan. 12 killing of Bauang election officer Felimon Asperin Jr.

The CSG made the move in response to the letter-request of Senior Superintendent Franklin Bucayu, La Union police director and head of Task Force Asperin which investigated the killing.

Dionisio has informed the Dumpits and the two other accused in separate letters to surrender their firearms to the CSG’s Firearms and Explosives Division.

The elder Dumpit was ordered to surrender three Armalite rifles, a 9-mm Ingram, a caliber .45 pistol, and a Smith and Wesson .357 revolver.

His son Butch, on other hand, was told to turn over to the FED an Armalite rifle, a caliber .223 rifle, a caliber.45 pistol, and a 9-mm Glock pistol.

The CSG, meanwhile, ordered Crispino to surrender his 9-mm CZ 75 pistol; Banay, his caliber .45 Norinco; and Mato, his caliber .45 Armscor pistol.
