DOJ: Nur’s medical checkup will be a security nightmare

At least 200 soldiers will have to be mobilized to provide security to former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) governor Nur Misuari if the court allows him to leave Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna for a medical checkup.

As such, the Department of Justice (DOJ) objected to his request to undergo an executive checkup in a hospital of his choice, saying that granting it would be a security nightmare for the military.

Misuari, who is detained on rebellion charges at Fort Sto. Domingo, was recently allowed to join a religious Muslim activity at the Blue Mosque in Taguig City.

Judge Sixto Marella Jr. of the Makati City Regional Trial Court Branch 138 is expected to issue a ruling on Misuari’s request within the next few days.

Lawyer Arthur Lim, Misuari’s legal counsel, said his client wants a medical checkup in either the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City or the Asian Hospital in Alabang, Muntinlupa.

The DOJ, represented by state prosecutor Peter Ong, asked Marella to junk Misuari’s request and just allow a doctor or a mobile clinic to visit him at Fort Sto. Domingo.

According to the DOJ, it would be too risky and too expensive on the part of the government if the court grants Misuari’s request.
