Work on La Union landfill to begin soon

SAN FERNANDO CITY — The construction of the nine-hectare engineered sanitary landfill of this lone city of La Union will start as soon as the contractor completes its design within two months, Mayor Mary Jane Ortega said yesterday.

Ortega led city officials in signing and awarding the contract to the winning bidder, Kane Construction Inc., a local construction firm affiliated with the international Conestoga-Rovers Associates, in Manila last week.

Kane Construction and four other companies took part in the bidding early this year.

Representatives of the World Bank (WB) and the Local Government Finance Division evaluated the bids.

Ortega said the WB-funded project will cost P163 million and will be constructed through the design-build-and-operate scheme.
