Lomibao orders review of journalists’ killings

- Bebot Sison Jr., Cecille Suerte Felipe -
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Arturo Lomibao has ordered a review of all cases of killings of and deaths threats against journalists.

Lomibao, appointed by President Arroyo as PNP chief last March 14, has been vocal about his personal commitment to ensure the safety and protection of journalists.

Lomibao has close ties with journalists having served as PNP spokesman and public information officer from Jan. 5, 1995 to July 1996.

"I have ordered the review of all cases of killings (of) and threats against journalists," said Lomibao during the PNP Night of the Manila Overseas Press Club (MOPC), chaired by STAR publisher Max Soliven, at the Hotel Intercontinental Manila in Makati City on Wednesday.

MOPC officials lauded Lomibao for the speedy resolution of the March 24 killing of Sultan Kudarat journalist Marlene Esperat inside her house in Tacurong City.

In less than a month after the killing, the PNP arrested four suspects, including the alleged gunman, in the killing.

The suspects are Jerry Cabayag, 24, the alleged gunman; Randi Grecia, the alleged lookout; Estanislao Vismos Jr. and Rowie Barua, 39, an active member of the Philippine Army.

Lomibao said the early resolution of the Esperat killing shows the keen resolve of the government and the police to go after those behind the killings of media practitioners.
