The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced yesterday that a special election will be held on May 30 to fill in the vacancy in the fifth congressional district of Cebu.
James Arthur Jimenez, director of the Comelecs education and information department, said the poll body resolved to call the special poll to allow residents of Cebus fifth district to elect their new representative, replacing Joseph Ace Durano who was appointed tourism secretary last November.
Under the law, Jimenez said the Comelec may call a special election in case a permanent vacancy occurs in the Senate or the House of Representatives at least one year before the expiration of the term.
Aspirants to the position may file their certificates of candidacy from April 22 to 28. Mayen Jaymalin
