In Cebu City jail, shabu found in pile of feces

CEBU CITY — The controversies that never seem to stop hounding the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center here are matched, if not exceeded, only by the ingenuity of those who perpetrate them.

The other day, the latest controversy got literally dirtier.

In a surprise raid, shabu, in at least 350 sachets, were found embedded in, of all things, a pile of human waste inside a halved drum in the toilet of one of the cells.

The raiding team, made up of members of the Cebu City Police Coordinating and Advisory Council (PCAC), caught everybody by surprise, including the warden, Nestor Velasquez, who was not informed about the raid codenamed "Operation Greyhound."

Velasquez, who ironically is a PCAC member, was just as red-faced as the other jail officials when the results of the raid became apparent.

Aside from shabu valued at P35,000, a number of deadly weapons improvised from scrap materials were seized.

Councilor Silvan Jakosalem, who heads the PCAC, quickly sent a text message to President Arroyo, who was still in Brunei, regarding the incident.

A similar message was sent to Interior and Local Government Secretary Angelo Reyes who promptly demanded a report from his regional officials. — Freeman News Service
