Peace covenant signed in Dagupan

DAGUPAN CITY — Local candidates for the May 10 polls signed a peace covenant here for a clean, honest and orderly elections on Sunday.

Superintendent Noli Taliño, police chief here, said the signatories were led by mayoralty candidates Teodoro Manaois of the Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP) and Benjamin Lim of the Lakas-CMD (Christian-Muslim Democrats).

Unopposed vice mayoralty bet Alvin Fernandez was also present but only nine of the 27 aspirants for councilors participated in the signing. They were: Joey Tamayo, Leon Palaganas, Farah Marie Decano, Tito Perez, Herminigildo Rosal, Elmer Lorica, Fausto Cuison, Maria Librada Reyna and Herminio Casilang.

The covenant, which was signed in front of the altar of St. John’s Cathedral, stated among others, that the candidates shall conduct themselves honorably at all times, uphold the rule of law, obey election laws and en banc resolutions of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The signatories also promised to campaign only on issues and platforms of government, and refrain from the use of guns, goons and gold in order to promote their election.

They vowed to avoid acts and deeds that may endanger the sanctity of the ballot, to promote a safe, clean, healthy and wholesome environment during the campaign period, respect life and abide by the decision of the majority and all duly-constituted authorities.
