Priest hits pols over relief goods

CEBU — A priest serving in landslide-hit areas of Southern Leyte, has found himself dragged into the squabbles of politicians over the distribution of relief goods.

Fr. Edmund Resus, parish priest of San Francisco town, however, has turned the tables and lashed at politicians who have criticized him.

"Our sincere intention to help must not be abused or misconstrued by politicians," he said in the dialect.

A squabble reportedly erupted between Rep. Anecito Saludo and his rival, Southern Leyte Gov. Rosette Lerias, when the solon’s aides said the relief goods must be placed at the disposal of Mayor Diego Yuboc, his political ally, instead of the vice mayor, Bonifacio Amarga Jr., an ally of Lerias.

Resus was dragged into the controversy because he helped Amarga distribute the relief goods at the parish center, instead of the town hall.

Saludo, apparently irked that Resus helped a rival, was quoted as saying that the priest should run in the next elections. — Freeman News Service
