TUBOD, Lanao del Norte Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) vice chairman Aleem Mimbantas asked the military yesterday morning for a safe conduct pass so he can seek medical treatment in nearby Cagayan de Oro City.
Col. Francisco Gudani, commander of the 1st Marine Brigade in Marawi City, said Mimbantas sent emissaries to ask for the safe conduct pass so he could seek immediate medical attention for an unspecified illness.
Gudani said the military may issue the safe conduct pass to Mimbantas, who is based in an MILF-influenced community in Masiu, Lanao del Sur, provided that the MILF leader's security escorts do not bring firearms.
Gudani said he is willing to personally escort Mimbantas to Cagayan de Oro City.
Mimbantas was named MILF vice chairman for military affairs by vice chairman Ebrahim Murad who was designated MILF chairman following the death of Hashim Salamat in July.
There is now a prevailing ceasefire agreement between the government and the MILF ahead of peace talks that are set to be held in Malaysia in the next few weeks. Lino dela Cruz
