Surigao poll exec killed in ambush

BUTUAN CITY The municipal election officer of Placer, Surigao del Norte was killed and her councilor-son was seriously wounded in an ambush by unidentified men yesterday morning.
Police said Wenefreda Cabañes Taer, 59, Commission on Elections (Comelec) officer of Placer town, and her son, Rodolfo Jr., 30, councilor of Alegria town, were riding tandem on a motorcycle when they were fired upon along the national highway in Barangay Pungtod in Alegria.
Taer died from two gunshot wounds in the head and buttocks, while her son was hit in the left cheek, right hand and right leg.
Police found nine empty shells four from M-16, four from caliber .45 and one from a shotgun at the ambush scene. Ben Serrano
