Thief shoots man dead

-
A man, while walking on his way to purchase a truckload of rice at a ricemill in Mandaue City, was shot dead on the spot by one of two robbery suspects at around 1 pm yesterday.

Felipe Negro, a resident of barangay Mamintao, Bogo town, sustained two gunshot wounds from a .45 caliber pistol at close range, after he resisted giving his waistbag to the suspect who tried to grab it away from him in a scuffle.

Jagobiao Police chief Nick Seno said witnesses saw Negro first alighting from his truck, leaving behind driver Adelio Pineda and truckboy Teopisto Catarman, and went toward Goodwill Milling in barangay Basak, Mandaue city .

While Negro was on his way, one of the two motorcycle-riding suspects alighted and trailed the victim for a while. As the suspect came near Negro, he quickly tried to grab the waistbag of Negro who tried to resist, resulting in a scuffle between the two. Apparently because of the resistance, the suspect shot Negro and got the bag, containing a yet undetermined amount of cash, fleeing with his cohort toward Jagobiao North road.

Seno said the information on the incident was relayed to the police who arrived late on the scene of the crime, thus the failure to intercept the fleeing suspects. Seno said the suspects may have followed the victim all the way from Bogo to Cebu and might have full knowledge of the victim’s activity that day.

At the crime scene, the police found two slugs of a .45 caliber pistol, a wallet believed to be that of the suspect’s containing P1,040 cash, and P600 from the victim’s pocket.

The remains of the victim, who, as of yesterday has no relatives yet coming to claim it, was brought to St. Anne’s Funeral Parlor in barangay Ibabao-Estancia, Mandaue City. — Freeman News Service
