LINGAYEN, Pangasinan Governor Victor Agbayani wants the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to demolish the illegal structures occupied by rich individuals on the shores of Lingayen Gulf.
In a letter to the DENR, Agbayani said "we have to protect the environment and the people. We cannot favor and cater to the selfish needs of few and rich individuals." He added that Lingayen Gulf is an environmentally-critical area.
The provincial government of Pangasinan is in the process of massively cleaning up the shores of Lingayen Gulf through the relocation of squatters. Unfortunately, Agbayani said the cleared area is now being occupied by rich individuals.
Reports received by Agbayanis office showed that the owners of the illegal structures applied for a foreshore lease with the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office of the local DENR. Pending the approval of their application, the owners decided to construct permanent structures.
Agbayani noted that the environment office said it would only fine the said owners but would still approve their application for lease.
"Loopholes in the DENR policies should be plugged to stop these affluent people from taking advantage of them," Agbayani said. Eva Visperas
