Two death convicts received yesterday a belated Christmas gift their freedom.
After a thorough review of their cases, the Supreme Court acquitted Pedro Flores and Zainudin Dalandas, both 37, who were separately meted the capital punishment for rape.
Flores daughter, who had accused him of raping her when she was 11 years old, recanted her allegation. Meanwhile, Dalandas claimed his sister-in-law whom he allegedly raped was not really a mental retardate.
The two said they intend to look for work right away to help their families.
Bureau of Corrections director Ricardo Macala said the Supreme Court has acquitted 23 death convicts, including Flores and Dalandas, since he assumed office in March 2001. Nikko Dizon
