From 41,931, the number of barangays has increased by 29 to 41,960, and observers attribute this to an increase in population.
Calvin Sandiwa, executive director of the Liga ng Barangay, said they accounted for the 29 new barangays during the recent elections of the Association of Barangay Councils.
The requisite for the creation of a new barangay is a population of at least 2,000 at the municipal level, and 5,000 for a highly urbanized city.
Under the Local Government Code of 1991, new barangays are created either by law enacted by Congress or an ordinance passed by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for municipalities or the Sangguniang Panglungsod for cities.
Most of the new barangays, Sandiwa said, were created by virtue of local ordinances. Perseus Echeminada
